how will global warming affect Lake Sevan?
Armenian scientists recently got their hands on fancy new toys with the help of German colleagues. They dump the sensors at various depths to measure water temperature in Sevan. These are high-frequency "accurate" devices.
Another device measures the oxygen concentration in water and transmits it to a computer for analysis.
Armenian and presumably German scientists created a new thermal regime assessment method for Sevan. They entered historical atmospheric temperature data to guess Sevan's water temperature dynamics, including trends of the past 100 years.
According to the scientist, the results indicate that if the atmosphere warms by 2-5 degrees, Sevan's stratification processes will undergo major changes. Stratification is when the lake develops three layers: surface, mid, bottom. The warming won't allow these layers to mix, thus creating favorable conditions for blooming [algae growth]. If this "mixing" process happens twice a year today, it could happen only once. Additionally, the bottom layer would suffer from a lack of oxygen.
Scientists gather Sevan data once a month to identify problems and find solutions.

Armenians celebrated Christmas
A festive liturgy was served in all churches yesterday evening. People took the lighted candles home.
Holy Liturgy was served this morning, followed by Ջրօրհնեք, in which a cross is submerged in water to symbolize Jesus entering the Jordan River. People take some of that water home as medicine for the sick. The priest then visits the homes of believers to announce the birth of Jesus Christ.
Story: Emperor Augustus ordered a countrywide census. The residents went to their birthplace to register. Joseph and Virgin Mary went to Bethlehem.
Pregnant Mary went into labor but they couldn't find any available guest rooms for birth so they went to a nearby cave instead. Jesus was born in poverty. "It is the true symbol of our souls."
Nearby shepherds, who were given a heads-up by angels about the birth, became the witnesses. Then came others, guided by stars, to give gifts. //

Kazakhstan uprising
[]2022 January 5|Context here.]] Things escalated in Kazakhstan last evening. Dozens of protesters and security forces were killed. Over 1,000 were injured with 62 in critical conditions. 2,300 were arrested.
All banks except for National Bank suspended their operations. A video from yesterday allegedly showed looters using heavy equipment to break into a bank in Almaty. Videos showed rioters breaching and looting gear from police facilities.
Video captured the aftermath of security forces using live ammo against rioters, which led to further escalation. Security forces encircled a group in Almaty. Shootout ensued.
In Aktobe, a vehicle ran over a group of security officers amid clashes. Elsewhere rioters were seen being shot by security forces.

Explosions were heard coming from Almaty's main square on Thursday, too. One witness said the gunfire didn't stop for 15 minutes. "They were shooting at people and vehicles in the square." The military cleared the main square on Thursday. The majority of rioters left the area when the first shots were heard. Witnesses report a large number of dead and wounded. The number hasn't been officially confirmed as of writing this.
Oil workers went on strike in solidarity with the protesters.

Several airlines, including Aeroflot, began canceling flights to and from Kazakhstan. The German consulate in Almaty suspended its activities and urged Germans not to travel there. The Armenian embassy urged its citizens to avoid crowded places.

Russian space agency ramped up the security at Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Unofficial reports claim private security forces were also being hired to protect the strategically important site.

Russia-led CSTO military bloc decided to send a contingent of peacekeepers for a limited time, announced Pashinyan after holding talks with Kazakh president Tokayev.
The peacekeepers, including 70 from Armenia and reportedly 5000 from Russia (unconfirmed) [UPDATE: 2500], were sent on Thursday. Their main goal is to guard important strategic and state facilities. The goal is to help free up the Kazakh forces so they can deal with the internal unrest.
A group of Armenian civil society organizations urged the government not to send peacekeepers because "Kazakhstan is an authoritarian state and it did not help Armenia on the borders with Azerbaijan".
Armenian MFA: We are concerned about the clashes in Kazakhstan. The information about the infiltration of terrorist groups is alarming. We strongly condemn violence. It cannot solve political issues.
We believe that steps need to be taken to prevent further clashes, restore peaceful political processes, and allow citizens to exercise their freedom of expression through peaceful rallies. //

Kazakhstan expert Shushan Khachatryan: I disagree with claims that president Tokayev "organized" the riots to weaken Nursultan Nazarbayev [many rioters' main target was Nazarbayev, with chants for him to leave for good]. Tokayev's power was already growing because Nazarbayev was voluntarily gradually handing it over to him. There is no logic in forcing something that is already happening. It's unlikely that this is a struggle between the two elite clans. Nazarbayev's influence won't disappear after this, even though he was replaced as the head of the Security Council. //
Other analysts believe it all started when the Kazakh government handled the petroleum gas price hike - which was going to happen sooner or later - in a very unprofessional and illiterate manner.

Gyumri hotels were fully booked on January 1 despite higher costs
The cold didn't scare away the tourists. Room reservations began in October. All hotels and guest houses were full on New Year's Day. A travel agency director believes Gyumri is a new alternative to Dilijan and Tsakhkadzor.
One agency believes that travelers spent less time and money this season because of shorter non-working New Year's holidays, but a field expert believes it is also due to the fact that tour agencies almost doubled the prices this year. "If in the past a family of four would pay $930 for six days, today they pay the same for three days."
