STARMUS 6 in Yerevan: Queen's Brian May talks about late singer and his good pal Freddie Mercury

Brian May: Freddie was interested in everything. He was fascinated by the fact that I was an astronomer and he used to say 'Brian, if it hadn’t been for me, you would be an astronomer'. Then I was very fortunate, I came back to astronomy and completed my Ph.D.

Freddie was very focused. He would talk about things, enjoy things like science, like my stereoscopic photography, all these things, but then he would be very focused. He would say everybody can do these things, I do my things, I do my music. That’s Freddie. //

Coincidentally, September 5 was Freddy mercury's birthday. Brian May was awarded Stephen Hawking Medal on that day. He will perform again tomorrow.

STARMUS 6: Brian May about Armenia

Reporter: What does Armenia mean for you?

May: To be in Armenia is a big thrill. I have never been here in my life. I'm very excited. I wish I had longer to see some of the countrysides. But I became very conscious of Armenia around the time of the 1988 earthquake, and I was part of the consortium of musicians who decided to try to do something to help the situation here, and at that time I wish I could come to Armenia but it wasn't possible at the time, so not this fulfills my dream.

I've also had the pleasure of working with [dudukist] Jivan Gasparyan. It's emotional for me because he is no longer here. That was an incredible experience for me to interact with him musically and we became a friend through Garik Israelyan. I did some work with Jivan and tried to absorb a little bit of Armenian feeling in the music but in a very small way. And this time I will have the pleasure of working with his [also dudukist] grandson.

anti-corruption: authorities launch asset forfeiture cases against several former officials accused of corruption

About a dozen ranking officials -- mostly from former administrations -- are suspected of embezzlement and money laundering. The list includes big names like ex-PM Hovik Abrahamyan, Serj's family members, etc.

Prosecutors have just invited the ex-deputy mayor of Yerevan Vahe Nikoyan and his wife to explain the origin of their wealth. Nikoyan is already going through a criminal trial over alleged rigging of land auctions in 2014. He was accused of "helping" HHK Ruben Hayrapetyan with land auctions.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are reportedly also eyeing the Russian-Armenian "teenage magician" soccer star Arsen Zakharyan

We learned on [August 26](https://www.reddit.com/r/armenia/comments/wyitmh/friday_news_digest_aug262022/) that Chelsea wants to transfer Zakharyan for a կլորիկ €15m գումար. That has left Chelsea rivals jealous.

It was later reported that he won't be moving to Chelsea because sanctions against Russia complicated the transfer of large sums to the Russian club he currently plays in. Zakharyan said he won't give up on his dream to move to Chelsea.

Real Madrid spokesman said the club usually prefers not to publish preliminary information about planned transfers, and that he is unaware of plans to transfer Zakharyan to Real Madrid.

trade grew significantly between Armenia and Russia

Dr. Ashot Tavadyan: In H1 2022 the exports to Russia +50%. The list of exported goods has also expanded. A significant contributor was the export of manufactured goods and relatively affordable energy in Armenia.

While the world pays $2,000 for gas, Armenia buys it for $165. This gives Armenia a competitive advantage.

Overall exports +36%. Around $543m worth of finished goods were exported to Russia, up from last year's $365m.

Before EAEU: $1.7b exports

After EAEU  : $2.5b

Soon  : $3.0b

If in the past 25% of our exports would go to Russia, this year it will reach 30%. It is great that we are exporting more manufactured goods, instead of raw materials, because it creates jobs in Armenia before the product is exported.

Beginning in 2019 the exports to Russia began to diversify, and today we export not only agriculture, but also alcohol, textile, and certain equipment.

Armenia should take advantage of Russia's импортозамещение (import substitution) plans and further increase exports. Russia has formed a special commission within the EAEU to regulate import substitutions. //

why did Russia invite Pashinyan but not Aliyev to the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok?

>The Eastern Economic Forum is an international platform for establishing and strengthening ties within the Russian and global investment communities, and for comprehensive expert evaluation of the economic potential of the Russian Far East, the investment opportunities it offers, and business conditions within advanced special economic zones.

Putin's spokesman said that the agreement to invite Pashinyan was reached a while ago, "especially considering that our Armenian colleagues have not been in these parts [of the country]."

Peskov added that those who arrived with negotiation groups were literally delighted with what they saw. Pashinyan delegation will spend the rest of the week in Vladivostok.

the head of Free Citizen NGO about weapon acquisitions, army standards, and geopolitics

Reporter: Why did the EU decide to invite Armenia to the new [European Political Community](https://www.reddit.com/r/armenia/comments/x6t6sq/sep52022_starmus_festival_brings_famous/) forum while Armenia maintains close relations with the Russian bloc?

Khurshudyan: To strengthen AM-EU relations. But more importantly, with MOD Papikyan's Monday trip to the US, you could say that "it has begun" - the process of gaining independence from Russia has begun. Pashinyan hinted this in a recent speech about the government having to struggle for Armenia's independence every day. Armenia cannot gain independence without Western help. It is of course Armenia's responsibility that we got ourselves in this mess by tolerating the Russian agents and plunderers for 20 years, but it's also due to Russia's imperialist influence that threatens our sovereignty and regularly takes away lands from us. We are losing villages and positions in Artsakh and Armenia with the direct participation of the Russian side. It appears today the government understands we need closer ties with the West.

Reporter: On the other hand, Pashinyan is currently visiting a Russian economic forum about the "multipolar world", a phrase used by Kremlin to justify its aggression against Ukraine. Wouldn't Pashinyan's participation endanger the efforts to build ties with the West?

Khurshudyan: Participation in this "seminar" is symbolic in nature. The focus will be on China and Russia, not Armenia. If Armenia is serious about the West, and if Armenia plans to acquire weapons from the West, then it is worth throwing a bone at Russia by participating in these forums and hosting Russian governors in Armenia to appease them. Our Western partners won't care much about these minor inconveniences.

Reporter: The government is attempting to establish military ties with [others], while our top diplomats spend a lot of time in Europe and the US. Are these genuine processes, or just attempts to make Russia jealous as a way to pressure them to be a "better" ally?

Khurshudyan: From what I can tell, these are genuine processes. Today Armenia is not receiving weapons from Russia, even though we have already made large payments. They are not supplying weapons, and they aren't refunding the cash, either. They have no problem with raising trade turnover with Turkey by $20 billion with an extra $2 billion allocation for a new Turkish nuclear plant, but they don't have money to refund Armenia or at least deliver the promised weapons? Armenia should have no constraints to acquire weapons from others, then. We see these efforts to substitute Russia. We only see what's being reported publicly.

Reporter: Is Russia still forcing Armenia to give a Meghri "corridor" to Azerbaijan?

Khurshudyan: If Russia could, if Armenia was still the same "poor kid" as Russia has always viewed it, then they could, but fortunately the West is offering its shoulder to Armenia today. How strong that shoulder is will depend on the government's flexibility. The US has positioned itself as the global arbiter and regularly pressures Azerbaijan when it violates rules. That's why they didn't invite Azerbaijan to the Democracy Summit, that's why they released the strong message after the invasion of Parukh, etc. FM Mirzoyan and Blinken recently signed a memorandum on Civil Nuclear Cooperation, and today we have MOD Papikyan holding talks with the US. That doesn't necessarily mean the US will begin delivering weapons to Armenia. Let's wait for details.

Reporter: Could the US allies deliver weapons to Armenia?

Khurshudyan: Maybe. Besides weapons, though, there are various NATO technologies and standards that Armenia needs. We can kindly explain to Russia that they cannot provide what we need, especially after the war in Ukraine, and considering the fact that we lost the 2020 war with their weapons, so we need certain technologies from NATO.

Reporter: What has Armenia gained from EAEU after Serj's signature in 2013?

Khurshudyan: Some vehicle resale business and an increase in trade, but at the cost of much bigger gains. It's been a waste of time. Armenia should have chosen the EU instead of the EAEU in 2013. There was a risk of [Armenia being punished like Ukraine], but at least at the time the military balance between Armenia and Azerbaijan was a lot more favorable for us. Serj's circles were convincing us that Russia had threatened to arm Azerbaijan if we chose the EU. In reality, Russia had already sold billions worth of weapons to Azerbaijan. Even if Russia had truly threatened Serj in such a manner -- which I doubt because Armenia would still remain in the Russian circle through CSTO and AM-RU military cooperation -- we would still be better off fighting with the 2013 military balance rather than 2020. And if Azerbaijan attacked us in 2013 after our decision to choose the EU, then the US would pressure them to stop. After all, the US president at the time was Barack Obama, who was not a moron like Trump. Besides that, at the time Russia was not in such a critical state to apply drastic measures against Armenia; they wouldn't want to open a "second front" in Armenia while dealing with Ukraine. So 2013 was a lost opportunity for European integration, which would mean technological integration, economic integration, development, and modernization of the army. Armenia could be the one to switch to NATO standards and weapons first, as Azerbaijan is doing today with the help of Turkey.

Reporter: What about the new CEPA agreement with the EU?

Khurshudyan: Our people sadly don't understand what the Eastern Partnership and CEPA truly are about.

Reporter: People only look at numbers: $x billion.

Khurshudyan: Yes, but people don't go deeper to understand what that cash will be used for. It's for the modernization of our economy. That's what the EU began in Moldova and Georgia.

Reporter: When Moldova and Georgia became EU candidates, Russia publicly stated they weren't against it because it wasn't going to include the installation of NATO bases.

Khurshudyan: Yes. Moreover, Russia "punished" only Ukraine during these processes, and only because in Ukraine they changed internal politics drastically and kicked out the pro-Russian forces. As for Moldova, Russia only applied sanctions on Moldovan wine. Moldovan wine did not meet European standards at the time, so Europe helped them raise production and sanitary standards. Moldova needed another 1-2 years to enter the European market, but the EU decided to make a temporary exception. The EU began paying a lot more than Russia for the same wine. Moldova achieved significant economic gains from this. Serj Sargsyan needed a bit of political will, which he did not display. At least he could have organized fair elections and let Raffi Hovhannisyan take over [and presumably go with the EU]. Would the Russians eat Serj for leaving voluntarily? But no, he decided to stay so the plunder could continue, and we received what we received. Whose door was an election-rigger supposed to knock on? The Russian club, of course. The West didn't like Serj and merely acknowledged him as president. That's it. This deprived us of the opportunity to modernize, and an opportunity to have the US on our side to pressure Azerbaijan not to start a war. Again, the military balance in 2013 was much better, and Azerbaijan was a lot weaker. Instead, we were promised protection if we stayed in the Russian Club, but that turned out to be a lie.

Reporter: What does "NATO standards" mean?

Khurshudyan: NATO is a military structure, but it's primarily political in nature. When Ukraine received a rejection, they complained that Turkey could join NATO, but not them. Ukraine was partially right because Turkey did not meet NATO standards politically, but they did meet militarily; the Turkish general and officer staff was entirely trained under NATO standards. Ukraine is only now training its staff in the UK and Germany so they can use NATO weapons. Armenia should prepare under NATO standards now, ahead of time, especially since we have great relations with Greece.

Reporter: Armenia regularly sends officers to train in Greece.

Khurshudyan: They need to send more. We need to expand cooperation and train commanders and reform the logistics system. Ukraine is 10x better than Russia at disrupting logistic chains on the battlefield today, thanks to NATO standards. Russia can't even deliver fuel. They get destroyed on their way because logistics are not organized properly. Our army continues to have corruption - although I've received information that a "clean up" has begun - and the army continues to have a "5th column" that works for Russia.

Reporter: Artsakh army leaders Jalal and Arzumanyan were arrested. The opposition accuses Pashinyan of shifting the blame on the military.

Khurshudyan: The so-called "opposition" you refer to is not an opposition, they are a remnant of the criminal-oligarchic regime. The real opposition couldn't make it into parliament, thanks to an intervention by Russia through its 5th column in Armenia, and also with the help of Azerbaijan which invaded Armenia in May 2021 [shortly before elections] thus strengthening the political standing of the former regime. With the help of its agents in the Armenian army, Russia secured a victory for Azerbaijan and secured its takeover of Shushi. Russia had three goals: keep the promise given to Azerbaijan, deploy Russian soldiers in the region, and replace Armenia's democratic government with a puppet regime. So when today the former regime claims that by charging army commanders Pashinyan administration is shifting the blame, that is in reality a Russian narrative. Sure, Pashinyan has his share, but it's not like it was a secret and we didn't know about Russia's role/influence in our army's top brass. Now with the efforts of investigative agencies more details are being uncovered, although I'm skeptical that we are dealing with "negligence". How can it be simple negligence when army commander Arzumanyan had access to 670 soldiers for Shushi defense but decided not to use them? Is that negligence or treason? When in the past the general attitude in the army was "we have no alternatives to Russia", then today our military leadership does not view it that way and is actively negotiating with others. //
