Defense Ministry explains the differences between Swedish Gripen and Russian SU-30SM jets. The Gripen is smaller, faster, consumes less fuel, has an extra radar, is better at close proximity air fights, while SU is significantly better at striking long distance targets, can carry more load, is twice cheaper and doesn't come with a big "learning curve" for the pilots. Defense Ministry has to calculate what the priorities are for the type of warfare they will be used in, and other types of weaponry that will be used with the jets. SU is the primary choice right now (12 jets), while Gripens could be purchased later when more funds are available. http://www.armtimes.com/hy/article/148373
