YEZNAyan (T/P) The official spelling of this unique surname is YEZNAian.

Alfred Yeznaian has kindly provided some background information on the

name, as follows:

YEZNA is the Turkish version of the Old Persian (Pahlavi) word AYEZNE,

which means son-in-law, or Pesah in Armenian. However, our real surname was

Atayan. When Shah Reza Pahlavi, the father of late king, visited neighboring

countries, and met Mustafa Kemal, the leader of the resurgent nation of Turkey,

he was impressed with the Turkish concept of surname registration, and decided

to implement that concept in Iran. Upon his return he established the office of

registration and ordered all citizens to have proper identification.

Arshak Atayan, brother of my grand father, applied for and received approval to

use the Atayan surname. When my father applied, he was told that the Atayan

name had already been registered, but that he could add a Persian suffix to the

name. My father refused to adopt a Persian name. Instead, he selected my

mother's surname since in her family there were no longer any living males.

When I became a U.S. citizen, I had a choice to make in the recording of my

family name, but it was too much trouble to adopt Atayan because all my

documents were Yeznaian.
