PIDEDJIan (Gr/A/T) The following information was kindly provided by Antovk

Pidedjian, son of Dr. Krikor Pidedjian:

“Our version of pide bread is different from thin pocket pita. Our pide is a thicker loaf

(no pocket) that was eaten on special occasions in Ottoman times. As a testimony to the

power of nicknames, my ancestors were not bakers or sellers of pide. They were in the

construction business (khalfas) – cement was their specialty. Whenever they finished a

big job, they would distribute pide to their village of Munjusun (near Gesaria). That

earned them the name “Pidedji.” The name was first used as the family name in the early

19th century. Judging from immigration records, there were other Pidedjians who were

not relatives of ours. However, the name appears to survive only with my relations, some

of whom are distant.” See PIDEJIan.
