BAKAMJIan (T) Bakam is a type of tree, the sap of which was used to dye felt for fez and saddle pads. Cesar
Chekijian provides the following information on this unique name:
“In Aintab, Turkey, in the 1860s two partners by the name of Yeghia, who were in the lucrative felt- (keche in Turkish) making business and who were
known as Kechejian, invented a dark red colored dye from the dark red/purple/maroon sap of the ‘Bakam’ tree, which is the name for a variety of tree
grown near Aintab.
The dye became very popular for not running or fading, business prospered and so, both partners’ families became known as the Bakamjians. One
partner’s daughter married the other partner’s son, creating only one Bakamjian family. My aunt married Yeghia’s grandson (also named Yeghia), who
was ordained in 1932 as Der Mesrob Bakamjian. My source is my first cousin Serco Bakamjian, who was Dr. Berge Bakamjian's uncle. Serco was one of the
committee members for the publication of the authoritative three volume work "History of Aintab" in the 1950s. His knowledge of Aintab families was
vast. He was my inspiration in pursuing our family tree and history. His father Rev. Mesrob Bakamjian was a teacher at a "College" (High School) in
Aintab and one of the leaders of the Aintab community in Lebanon until the late 1950s.
Serco had said that the tree had been imported from a secret origin and that they had referred to it as a "pear tree." Probably as a smoke screen. It
is my conjecture that the "pear tree” was in reality a “bloodwood tree” imported from Morocco where it originated. The Meghrublian family in Aintab
traded with Morocco (Maghreb is Arabic for Morocco). Resources such as the bloodwood tree would have easily gravitated from Morocco to Alexandria-
Sanjak by sea and one more day by cart ride to Aintab.”

conjecture, the following scenario is plausible.
When an Eastern Armenian-speaking person bears the name Boyajian, he writes
the name with the spelling of the letter J (hee) for the y sound instead of (yech) as
is done in Western Armenian. Then, when a Western Armenian-speaking person
sees the name Boyajian spelled with the letter J (hee), he pronounces it Bohajian.

BOZAJIan (T) A bozaji is a purveyor of boza, a fermented drink made from millet. The
boza ale has recently gained wider popularity. Here follows a quotation from the
Bizarre News Magazine issue of January 17, 2007:
Breast-Enhancing Beer Gains Popularity
LONDON, Since Bulgaria joined the European Union, sales of Boza Ale, which claims
to give women bigger breasts, has skyrocketed. European men have been
purchasing the beer, made from yeast and fermented flour, for European women
since the extra taxes were removed with EU participation, Britain's the Sun
reported Monday. Bar owners and shopkeepers are also stocking up, the report
said. The Sun said a Romanian man, Barmy Constantin Barbu, traveled across the
Danube River just to purchase a case of Boza Ale for his wife. "I really hope I see
an improvement," Barbu said.

BURGHOULian (Ab) Processor/vendor of boiled, dried, hulled and cracked wheat.
Note: For the benefit of our readers who wonder why the derivation of bulghour is not
credited to the Armenians or Persians, the following exposition by Dr. Herand Markarian
is offered.
“ The Armenians use blghoor, without the "u" sound for cracked wheat.
According to Malkhasiants, the word blghoor has two meanings:
a-- The wet sediment of crushed grapes (referred to in colloquial Armenian
as chech) kept in clay casks to turn sour, later to be distilled as alcohol.
b- Boiled, dried, hulled and cracked wheat.
The Arabs call cracked wheat burghul not bulghour.
Now to the etymology of the word.
In Arabic, there is a word burgh, which is a synonym for wheat. So, the first part
of "burghool is definitely Arabic.
Now to the second, the"ul" part of the word.
In Arabic the verb "ellelu" is the past tense of the verb "make", i.e "made".
"ell" pronounced as "ul" used in burghul, means "made from". Thus, BURGHUL
means "made from wheat".
The bottom line is the word BURGHUL is a pure Arabic word.
It seems throughout time, there have been other variations of the pronunciation of the
word.
Interestingly the great Malkhasiants missed the Arabic root of the word, and thus thought
the word had a Turkic origin. But as explained above, it is a genuine Arabic word.
In passing let me say, we Armenians do have a word for brghool. It is dsavar. It comes in
a few grain sizes depending on what it is used for. When making pilaf we use a relatively
large grain size; for tebule' the small size.
