We are saddened to report the passing away of Varouj Basmadjian, aged 82, on November 10, 2020, in Noblesville, Indiana, USA. During the past few years, his dementia/Alzheimer’s situation had deteriorated, but the cause of his death was sadly due to COVID-19.
Varouj was born in Addis Ababa, on June 28, 1938 to Georges and Marie (Erzingatzian) Basmadjian.
On completing his education at Lycée Guébré Mariam, Varouj joined the Ethio-Swedish Institute of Building Technology, graduating with a degree in architecture and building technology. He then worked at an architectural and engineering firm where he was involved in one of the major assignments of that firm: the construction of the headquarters of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia near the theater.
Varouj and Araxy Terzian got married in 1965 and eventually had 3 children. In 1970, they migrated to Johannesburg, South Africa. Varouj worked in an architectural firm in Johannesburg and was involved in the supervision of the design and construction of the general hospital in Johannesburg, among other projects. Typical of Armenian families, in 1996, they migrated again – this time to the US, except that two of their children stayed on before ultimately moving to Perth, Australia. In the US, Varouj was partner and director of a home improvement center. He later carried out some consulting work and was involved in marketing tiles and carpets.
He will always be remembered as a gentleman, a kind, consistent, honest and considerate individual, and a loving family man.
