Vahan Kevork Pogharian, 86, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2022, in New Jersey with his sons by his side. He leaves his three sons and five grandchildren: Mark and his wife Susan of Spring Lake, NJ and their children Daron, Raffi, and Haig; Gary and his wife Heidi of Plain City, OH and their children Melissa and Michael; Glenn and his wife Anita of Englewood Cliffs, NJ. He also leaves many loving nieces and nephews in US, UK, France, Netherlands, Australia and Ethiopia.
Vahan was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Anna (Bedrosian), who died in Worcester in 2011. Poetically he joined her in eternal life on their wedding anniversary date. Vahan was also predeceased by his parents Kourken and Hermine (DerGhazarian) and by his seven sisters and two brothers.
Vahan was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He received his elementary education in Addis Ababa, high school education in Nicosia, Cyprus at the AGBU Melkonian School and attended college in the United States upon arriving in 1958. In September 1959 he was drafted and proudly served two years in the U.S. Army 3rd Armored “Spearhead” Division, stationed in Gelnhausen, Germany. After his military obligation he returned to Worcester where he worked, married his loving wife, and was blessed to raise three sons.
Vahan worked for the former CONRAIL Railroad Company and managed its Intermodal Operation for 34 years. After the death of his sweetheart of 47 years, Vahan moved to Mahwah, NJ to be closer to his children and their beautiful families. Prior to his relocation he was an active member of Armenian Church of Our Saviour in Worcester, MA and then subsequently, Saint Leon Armenian Church in Fairlawn, NJ.
Family and friends can pay their last respects from 10:00-11:00 am at the Armenian Church of Our Saviour on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, followed by a prayer service at 11:00 am. Burial to follow at Hope Cemetery, Worcester, Mass.
