Torunik (Armenian: Տորունիք) is a village in the Sisian Municipality of the Syunik Province in Armenia. Formerly in the Sisian Rayon of the Armenian SSR, and before that it fell in the Zangezur gavar of the Elizavetpol Province of the Russian Empire. The village name as Zghlshafak (Զղըլշաֆակ) before being renamed Torunik on 8/8/1991.
Previously known as Shaklar (Շեխլար), Shikhlar (Շիխլար), Shikhlyar (Շիխլյար), or Shkhlar (Շխլար).
Demographics
The Azeri inhabitants left during the 1988-89 ethnic tensions and in May 1988 there was an influx of 38 households (78 people) of Armenian refugees from Azerbaijan, bringing the Armenian population to 62 households (138 individuals).
In 2001 the population was 181.
In 2010 the population was 138.
