Tigran Petrosian
Of all the world chess champions one of the most idiosyncratic was Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian (1929-84) - the champion from 1963 10 1969.
Petrosian allied a superb feeling for positional harmony, with a mastery of Aaron Nimzowitsch's doctrine of prophylaxis, which enabled him often to prevent opponents from undertaking an operation, long before it had even occurred to them.

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 27, NOYAN TAPAN. A monument to 9th world chess champion Tigran Petrosian opened in the town of Aparan. By now it was considered that tha famous chess-player was born in Tbilisi where he lived until he turned 17. But now it became known that the future champion was born in the village of Mulki of Aparan region and the family of Petrosians moved to Tbilisi when Tigran was 2. In 2004, at Petrosian's 75th birth anniversary, the residents of Aparan decided to perpetuate the memory of their compatriot. The initiative of setting a monument to the world champion in Aparan central square belongs to the Nig-Aparan compatriot union. The monument was built with its resources. The author of monument to Tigran Petrosian is sculptor Misha Margarian. An eternal fire will burn near the monument.
Aghvan Hovsepian, RA Prosecutor General, honorable Chairman of the Nig-Aparan compatriot union, Serge Sargsian, RA Defence Minister, Chairman of Chess Federation of Armenia, Academician Vanik Zakarian, Honorable Chairman of the Chess Federation of Armenia, Academician Gevorg Brutian were present and spoke at the ceremony of monument's opening. Gagik Hovhannisian, Secretary General of Chess Federation of Armenia, read numerous telegrams they received, including a telegram from Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, Chairman of International Chess Federation, former world champions Soris Spaski and Garry Kasparov.
It was decided to name Aparan central square, where the monument was set, after Tigran Petrosian. A chess school, a museum of the world champion will also open in the town.

In homage to one of the greatest chess players of all time, the Chess Academy of Armenia is proud to hold a unique tournament honoring Armenia's favorite son. The former world champion, who passed away in 1984, would have been 75 this year and most probably quite impressed with Armenia's chess legacy he helped initiate and encourage.
The Tigran Petrosian Memorial Internet Tournament, the last in a series of tournaments dedicated to the memory of the 9th World Champion, includes a novel twist on the conventional tournament format customarily seen. The organizers have decided to host a tournament before the largest public audience possible, with the games themselves being played online. The national teams of France, China, Russia, and host country Armenia will square off via the internet, with each four-player team locking horns in a six round event. Games begin at 12:00 noon (Paris time), 14:00 (St. Petersburg), 15:00 (Yerevan), and 19:00 (Beijing) daily from December 18-23, 2004.
