REGULAR ACT OF VANDALISM AGAINST ARMENIAN DIASPORA COMMITTED IN STAVROPOLYE
Noyan Tapan Armenians Today Nov 15 2005
PYATIGORSK, NOVEMBER 15, NOYAN TAPAN - ARMENIANS TODAY. An attempt to set on fire the building of the town Center for Armenian Culture was made early in the morning of November 13, at about 1:00 am, in the town of Pyatigorsk of Stavropol territory. Offices of a number of Armenian NGOs are located in the Center. Noyan Tapan was informed about this by the "Yerkramas" ("Krai") newspaper of Russian Armenians.
The building of the Cultural Center is situated in the vicinity of town's Armenian church. The moment of committing the crime was fixed by the video cameras for observation. Three malefactors in advance wrote "Allah Akbar" with a green paint on building's wall, then threw a bottle with a burning mixture at the window of the building. Fortunately, the mixture hit the frame of the double-glazed window and not the building. The neighbors in residential houses in front of the Center building, hearing the explosion, called a fire brigade, which arrived within 7 minutes and put out the ignition. An investigation group and a cynologist with a dog were also called to the locus delicti but the track brought to a road where it came abruptly to an end: to all probability, the malefactors drove away by car.
A special sitting of Ethnic Council was held on November 13 in Pyatigorsk with participation of representatives of 7 communities - Bulgarian community, cultural center of peoples of Daghestan in Caucasian Minvodi, community of Greeks of the town of Pyatigorsk, Pyatigorsk Jewish community "Geula", union of Ukrainians "Yatran," Pyatigorsk town autonomy of adygs, Armenian national-cultural town autonomy.
A statement was adopted at the sitting, which, in particular, read: "As it was found out, unknown persons wrote "Allah Akbar" on the building of the Center, threw a bottle with a burning mixture at the building, as a result of which the building ignited. The law qualifies such actions as a deliberate destruction of property by means of setting it on fire, at the same time the inscription left on the facade of the building is the evidence of the fact that those having committed this misdeed pursued the goal to destabilize the situation in the town of Pyatigorsk and an attempt to lunge the Moslem population of the town and Islamic cultural entities. This scandalous matter is a link in the chain of such facts that, unfortunately, became usual fenomena in our town. All this is a wave of crimes aimed at undermining the foundations of civil society and moral values, which can't but worry the public, including national-cultural formations."
The Ethnic Council of the town of Pyatigorsk condemns the act of vandalism and emphasizes inadmissibility of a response by the population to such provocations. The Council gives assurance that a careful investigation will be carried out by the respective power structures and those guilty will be brought to account, as well as expresses hope that the municipal authorities will give an objective estimation to the incident.
As Eduard Kondian, Director of Executive Board of Directors of Stavropol Territorial Department of the Union of Russian Armenians, informed, the management of the Pyatigorsk Armenian national-cultural autonomy is to pass the respective statements to the municipal Prosecutor's Office, Department of Internal Affairs and administration. Eduard Kondian has no doubt that the misdeed wasn't committed by Moslems. "We don't consider this version at all," he mentioned. "We trace through the connection between the attempt of setting fire on the building of Armenian Cultural Center in Pyatigorsk and the recent act of vandalism in Budyonovsk," Eduard Kondian declared. He also emphasized that actions against ethnic minorities are quite frequent both in the town and the territory.
