A notable absentee from the trials was Australia's only male lifter at last year's Athens Olympic Games, Sergo Chakhoyan, after he allegedly returned a positive dope sample when tested during the Oceania titles in October.
Australian weightlifting officials have been coy about Chakhoyan's position, saying there has been no official word from drug-testing bodies, although there obviously is the serious possibility that the former world record holder is only a positive B sample return away from a second offence and a life ban.
Chakhoyan tested positive at the 2001 Goodwill Games and was subsequently banned for two years, missing the Commonwealth Games in Manchester.
