Sao Paolo

Sao Paolo is the largest city in Brazil. The city is the capital of the State of Sao Paolo, the most populous Brazilian state. It is also the richest city of Brazil. Sao Paolo exerts global influence in commerce and finance as well as arts and entertainment.

In 2005 San Paolo City Parliament adopted a resolution that recognizes the Armenian Genocide. The draft to the resolution was represented by the deputy Joseliano Gadelia and was put to discussion on April 14.

The resolution stated that the Ottoman Turkey committed genocide over 1,5 million of Armenians, while the rest of the Armenian residents were exiled from their historical motherland.

The resolution emphasized that such crimes against humanity contradict to the norm of the international co-existence and should be strictly condemned.

The City Parliament expressed their friendly attitude and respect to the Armenian people and applied to the President of Brazil, calling for taking steps to recognize the Armenian genocide at a federal level.

The formula was adopted unanimously and 43 deputies of the parliament signed the document as co-authors. Roberto Tripoli, head of the San Paolo City Parliament, handed the ratified copy of the document to Ashot Yeghiazarian, by then RA consul general to San Paolo.

In 2005 within the framework of the festivities marking the 1600th Anniversary of Armenian Script, as well as the week of Armenia, San Paulo major communities held a number of events including the annual exhibition of Gymnasium after Duryan.

Heads of all religious and political organizations of the Armenian community of Brazil participated in the exhibition.

On October 29 2005, by then, Armenian Consul General Ashot Yeghiazaryan and head of the Armenian Studies Department of San Paulo State University Lusine Eghiazaryan gave lectures, as well as showed documentaries and photos about Armenia. Besides, youth of the Brazilian Armenians presented programs on their trips to Turkey and Armenia.
