Mardakert is the name of a region of the Republic of Artsakh, with its capital being a town of the same name. The town of Martakert is very close to the front lines with Azerbaijan. The town changed hands a few times during the war, and is now heavily defended. The November, 2005 Armenia Fund telethon was dedicated to building the infrastructure and economy of this region.
During the four day April War in 2016, the eastern border of this region saw much of the fighting, with part of the town of Talish captured briefly, before being retaken by Armenian forces. The Azeri soldiers murdered and mutilated the bodies of 3 elderly Armenians who remained in their homes during the fighting.
