With the 16th pick in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, their highest in 20 years, the Yankees took Cole’s eventual successor as UCLA’s ace and another California native, 6’4” righthander James Kaprielian. Kaprielian, ranked as the draft’s 19th best prospect by Baseball America, has a four-pitch mix with a strong changeup and curveball, and projects to reach the majors quickly, with likely upside of a mid-rotation starter. He touches 95 mph with his fastball but mostly sits in the low 90’s.

On May 15, Kaprielian combined on a 10-inning no-hitter, pitching nine innings, something Cole could never claim.

In his junior season, Kaprielian put up a 10-4 record with a 2.03 ERA, pitching 106.2 innings and striking out 114.
