Garo Ghazarian to be Guest Speaker At Dec. 16 Lecture in La Crescenta

LA CRESCENTA, CA - Attorney Garo Ghazarian will be the guest speaker on "The Armenian Bar Association's Defense of Armenian Rights" at Armenian Apostolic Church of Crescenta Valley, located at Western Prelacy's " Dikran and Zarouhi Der Ghazarian " Hall, 6252 Honolulu Ave., in La Crescenta, California on December 16, at 1pm.
The Armenian Bar Association, founded in 1989, is currently chaired by Garo Ghazarian, Esq. During the past 23 years, the Association has been involved in a host of matters with the constant goal of advancing the interests of the Armenian people in both Armenia and the Diaspora. Ghazarian will provide an overview of the Association's structure, its operating committees and all of its activities, with a special emphasis on activities of the past 30 months. He will also set forth the anticipated activities of the next 30 months, leading up to the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide Commemoration and beyond.
Ghazarian served as the Vice-Chairman of the Glendale City's Civil Service Commission, which oversees the 1700 employees of the City, including its Police and Fire. He is the Dean of People's College of Law (PCL) in Los Angeles and the owner of a law firm based in Encino, Calif., which is devoted exclusively to the field of Criminal Defense. Recently, he successfully concluded his representation of Dr. Arnold Klein MD (a Beverly Hills dermatologist), regarding pop star Michael Jackson's death in 2009. Due to his efforts, no criminal charges were filed against his client. He is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL); Board Member of Mexican American Bar Association-PAC; Board Member of Armenian Center for National & International Studies (ACNIS). Ghazarian has, on numerous occasions, been a guest on CNN/Headline News, Fox TV-LA, and Al Jazeera English TV News.
The presentation will be made in English. However, those who wish to pose questions in the Armenian language to Ghazarian during the question and answer session will have their questions answered in Armenian. This event, which is organized by Crescenta Valley Church Education Committee, is free and open to the public. There will be a reception before the start of the program at the completion of the Divine Liturgy.
Legal Scholar Garo Ghazarian Appointed To Glendale Civil Service Commission
GLENDALE - The City Council of Glendale hasunanimously confirmed the nomination of law school dean and Professor GaroGhazarian to the City's Civil Service Commission. In making the nomination,Council Member and two-time former mayor, Rafi Manoukian, referred his Councilcolleagues to Ghazarian's vast legal experience and to his significantcommunity involvement. The nominationwas seconded by Council Member Frank Quintero, who had this to say aboutGhazarian, `He's a great nominee and he's going to do a very good job on theCivil Service Commission.'
Council Member Ara Najarian, a past Glendale mayor, added `I support Mr. Ghazarian. I've known him for many years. He is a very active member of the community,the law enforcement community and the local bar associations. Garo Ghazarian is not afraid to speak hismind, and does so with due respect.' Laura Friedman, Glendale'spresiding mayor, remarked that though she does not personally know Mr.Ghazarian, `Looking at his resume, I thought to myself, wow, what acatch!' Newly-appointedCommissioner Ghazarian, having taken the oath of office, attended his firstCivil Service Commission hearing on December 14. From the dais, he thankedManoukian for the nomination, and the City Council for the appointment. He also congratulated his predecessor, Ara Hatamian, for a job well done during histenure. Besides hiscommitment to the City of Glendale for the nextfour years as one of its five Civil Service Commissioners, Ghazarian continuesto serve as the Dean of the Peoples College of Law in Los Angeles, where for the past 17 years hehas been a professor of criminal law. Inaddition, he is the Vice-Chair of the Armenian Bar Association, Co-Chair of itspro-bono committee, a board member of MABA-PAC (Mexican-American Bar Association, Political Action Committee), a board member of Yerevan-based thinktank A.C.N.I.S. (Armenian Center for National & International Studies), anda regular legal commentator on national and international news networks,including CNN, Headline News, and Al Jazeera English TV. `Garo Ghazarian isan indispensible member of the Armenian Bar Association,' said Armenian Bar Chairman Edvin Minassian. `His service to the community is vital and welldocumented. The Civil ServiceCommission establishes the rules and policies under which Glendale'smerit system operates, ensuring continuation of Glendale's reputation as a city whoseemployees attain and keep their positions on the basis of ability, training andexperience, rather than on unwarranted considerations and affiliations. It also serves as a quasi-judicial body inhearing employee appeals against disciplinary actions such as suspension,reduction or removal.
