The folk-rock band “BAMBIR” was formed in 1978 in Gyumri and gained acknowledgement in Armenia and abroad. The band has given concerts in Gyumri, Yerevan, Moscow, St. Petersburgh, Los Angeles, Fresno, Moldova and Georgia. The main composer is Gagik Barseghian (a.k.a. Jag). The repertoire also includes traditional Armenian songs, modern arrangements of Komitas and mediaeval Armenian music. Besides Gagik Barseghyan has written music for about 30 theatre performances and two movies. In 1982 “BAMBIR” won the Folk Music award at the International Festival at Lida, Belorussia. In 1986 they created a musical “Maugli”(director – Khoren Abrahamyan). After the earthquake in 1988 the band moved to Yerevan. Then in 1989 they made a United States tour. In 1995 they went for a Concert series to Russia, Georgia and Baltic countries. They performed in 1998 at the Armenian days in Moscow, then celebrated the 20th anniversary of Bambir. Only in 1999 the band released their first CD called “BAMBIRQUAKE”, dedicated to the memory of the victims of the disastrous earthquake in 1988 that caused terrific ruins in the musicians’ native city Gyumri. Originally issued in a very limited pressing on the band's own Bambir label, the album was reissued in 2002 year on Pomegranate Music label in USA and had excellent response. In 2003 the second album “J & G”(“Jesus and Grigor”), dedicated to the 1700th Anniversary of adopting Christianity in Armenia as state religion was released.
