The Armenian State Dance Ensemble “Barekamutyun” was established in 1987 by Norayr Mehrabian, who currently holds the prestigious title of “National Artist of Armenia”, bestowed upon him by the President of Armenia.

From inception, the ensemble gained wide recognition due to its unique style, which stands out from all other existing dance companies in Armenia. Maestro Mehrabian has designed an exclusively distinctive direction in modern Armenian dance, combining elements of folk, classical and contemporary choreography. The ensemble also performs the folk dances of various nations of the world, arranged by other professional choreographers.

The ensemble dances to the timeless music of Armenia’s most renowned composers, such as Komitas, Sayat-Nova, Aram Khachatryan, Arno Babajanyan, Edgar Hovhannisyan, as well as the nation’s contemporary greats, including Terteryan, Ara Gevorgyan and Allan Hovhannes.

Barekamutyun Dance Ensemble participates in a number of large-scale events throughout Armenia. Some of these celebrations include the 1700th anniversary of the Adoption of Christianity in Armenia, the 1600th anniversary of creation of the Armenian alphabet, the All-Armenian Festival of the foundation “Mek Azg, Mek Mshakuyt” (“One nation, one culture”) and the monumental celebration of Armenia’s 15th year of Independence in 2006.

For more than two decades, due to its ever-changing repertoire and frequent performances both in Armenia and across the world, Barekamutyun has upheld its status as Armenia’s most productive and dynamic ensemble.

In 2008, because of the group’s significant contribution to the cultural heritage of the country, “Barekamutyun” was awarded the title of “Honored Dance Ensemble” by the order of the President of Armenia.
