Armenian rug and carpet making goes back many centuries, and is has well known designs and elements. Lori, Tavush, Zangezur and Karabakh are some of the best known rug producing areas where the cottage industry was still going up to the 1960s or so.

Oldest Rug in the World

The oldest rug known to survive in the world, known as the Pazyryk carpet, was found frozen in the ice in Siberia. According to most sources, it was manufactured in Ancient Armenia, using the Armenian double knot and Armenian cochineal for the red color. It is displayed at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
