Status
Rare species. Included in the Red Book of the former Soviet Union.
Habitat in Armenia
Can be met on the southern slope of Mt. Aragats, in Ashtarak, Abovyan, Vedi, Vayk, Kapan, and Meghri, regions.
Number in the wild
Some 4 – 6 specimens per hectare. The overall number is about 1000 – 1500 specimens.
Reasons for decrease in number
Intensive use of the territories by men. Catch of the snakes.
Number in captivity
Kept in some zoos of the former Soviet Union, Europe, and in the Institute of Zoology of Armenia.
Measures of protection taken
Preserved at Khosrov Nature Reserve.
