Status

Rare species. Included in the Red Book of the former Soviet Union.

Habitat in Armenia

In 1970’s met around Jrvejh and Voghjaberd villages (Kotayk Marz), around Yerevan, and near the wetlands of Arax basin.

Nowadays mostly met near Echmiadzin, Masis, Sisian region and Voghjaberd (Kotayk region).

Number in the wild

According to 1956 data, 40 specimens were registered per 1 kilometer route. In 1976 this number decreased to 20 in Vayk region. Nowadays the number has rapidly decreased. In some places they have disappeared.

Reasons for decrease in number

Drainage of water reservoirs. Destruction of natural habitat.

Number in captivity

Used to be kept in the Institute of Zoology of Armenia.

Measures of protection taken

Some 1500 artificially raised specimens set free on Azat water reservoir (Artashat region) in 1985 – 1986.
