Eight-year-old Moscow-based Nikita Ayvazyan (playing for Russia) has won the title of European Chess Champion in a children’s competition in Batumi, Georgia. The boy earned 8 points out of possible 9, leaving behind his closest competitors by 1.5 points. Ayvazyan was the only representative of Russia at the tournament that had brought together 53 participants from nine countries.

Ayvazyan is a charge of the Tigran Petrosyan Chess School in Moscow. Two years ago he drew with the then FIDE world champion Vladimir Kramnik in a séance of simultaneous play. The wonder-child is now going to play in the world championship in Antalya, Turkey, in November. (Sources: Armenian Chess Federation reports, Regnum.ru).
