- April 20 - The Ottoman Army under Djevdet Bey begins the Siege of Van after its residents refuse to allow the Armenian men to be drafted and slaughtered.
- April 24 - The Ottoman Empire arrests hundreds of Armenian intellectuals, executing most. Armenians mark this as the start of the Armenian Genocide and commemorate the anniversary.
- May 19 - The invading Russian Army liberates Van and ends the siege.
- July 30 - The Russians retreat from Van, forcing the Armenians living there to flee for their lives.
