Chechnya is a federal subject (a republic) of the Russian Federation. It is located in the North Caucasus, and within 100 kilometres (62 miles) of the Caspian Sea.[12] The capital of the republic is the city of Grozny. As of the 2010 Russian Census, the republic was reported to have a population of 1,268,989 people.

The Armenian community, which used to number around 15,000 in the 1980s, has dwindled to 424 Armenians left according to the 2002 census. The Armenian church of Grozny was demolished by the communist government in 1930.
